6-Day Rwanda Primates & Forest Escape

Detailed Itinerary

Arrival in Kigali & Transfer to Gishwati–Mukura

The journey begins in Kigali, where the city’s cultural and historical layers are briefly introduced through curated visits depending on arrival time. A scenic drive then leads into the lush landscapes surrounding Gishwati–Mukura National Park. Upon arrival, a gentle forest walk is taken to experience the recovering highland ecosystem. Dinner and overnight are provided at Gishwati Lodge or an equivalent eco-focused stay overlooking the forest canopy.

Gishwati Primate Encounters & Transfer to Volcanoes

The morning is dedicated to primate tracking and birding in Gishwati, a forest where L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and diverse birdlife are often observed. After lunch, travellers are driven north toward Volcanoes National Park. As the volcanic peaks appear in the distance, the evening is spent settling into lodges such as Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge, or Bisate Lodge for a more exclusive experience.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

The day is highlighted by one of the world’s most profound wildlife encounters—gorilla trekking. Guided rangers lead the ascent through bamboo and montane forest until a habituated gorilla family is found, granting an intimate hour in their presence. The afternoon is spent at leisure or exploring cultural initiatives around Kinigi. Overnight at the same lodge.

Golden Monkey Trekking & Transfer to Nyungwe

A light trek in the bamboo zones introduces the playful golden monkeys, known for their energy and expressive behaviour. After the encounter, the journey continues south to Nyungwe Forest National Park through rolling hills and tea plantations. Overnight at One&Only Nyungwe House for luxury travellers or Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel for a comfortable mid-range option.

Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk

At dawn, the rainforest awakens as travellers embark on a guided chimpanzee trek deep within Nyungwe’s rich biodiversity. The experience is complemented in the afternoon by a canopy walkway experience, offering panoramic views above the treetops. The evening is spent relaxing at the lodge while surrounded by Nyungwe’s serene landscapes.

Return to Kigali

After a peaceful breakfast overlooking the forest, travellers are driven back to Kigali via scenic, winding routes. Depending on the schedule, optional stops may be made before drop-off at the hotel or airport, marking the end of the forest-inspired escape.

Travel Tips

  • 1. Prepare for early mornings
Primate treks in Volcanoes and Nyungwe start very early, often before sunrise, so travellers should expect several early wake-ups and plan their rest accordingly.
  • 2. Pack layered clothing
Temperatures shift quickly from cool, misty mornings to warm afternoons. Breathable layers, a light fleece, and a waterproof jacket are ideal.
  • 3. Wear proper trekking gear
Good waterproof hiking boots, long trousers, and gaiters help with muddy trails, stinging nettles, and slippery sections in Volcanoes and Nyungwe.
  • 4. Bring gloves for gorilla trekking
Gardening-style gloves make it easier to grip vegetation and avoid scratches when navigating steep or thick forest terrain.
  • 5. Carry a small waterproof daypack
A lightweight daypack is useful for water, snacks, a camera, and rain protection during treks that can last several hours.
  • 6. Stay hydrated and energized
Carry water and energy snacks provided by the lodge—treks can be physically demanding due to altitude and humidity.
  • 7. Take altitude seriously
Volcanoes National Park sits at a high elevation, so travellers should pace themselves, hydrate well, and avoid strenuous activities on the arrival day.
  • 8. Respect wildlife distance guidelines
Whether observing gorillas, golden monkeys, or chimps, following ranger instructions preserves safety and supports responsible tourism.
  • 9. Protect cameras and phones from moisture
Rainfall can occur without warning in Nyungwe and Volcanoes; dry bags or zip-lock bags are useful for protecting electronics.
  • 10. Embrace slow travel between parks
The road journeys between Gishwati, Volcanoes, and Nyungwe offer scenic tea plantations, rolling hills, and villages—travellers get more out of the itinerary by enjoying these landscapes rather than rushing through them.
