6-Day Rwanda Primates & Forest Escape

The journey begins in Kigali, where the city’s cultural and historical layers are briefly introduced through curated visits depending on arrival time. A scenic drive then leads into the lush landscapes surrounding Gishwati–Mukura National Park. Upon arrival, a gentle forest walk is taken to experience the recovering highland ecosystem. Dinner and overnight are provided at Gishwati Lodge or an equivalent eco-focused stay overlooking the forest canopy.

The morning is dedicated to primate tracking and birding in Gishwati, a forest where L’Hoest’s monkeys, blue monkeys, and diverse birdlife are often observed. After lunch, travellers are driven north toward Volcanoes National Park. As the volcanic peaks appear in the distance, the evening is spent settling into lodges such as Five Volcanoes Boutique Hotel, Mountain Gorilla View Lodge, Tiloreza Volcanoes Ecolodge, or Bisate Lodge for a more exclusive experience.

The day is highlighted by one of the world’s most profound wildlife encounters—gorilla trekking. Guided rangers lead the ascent through bamboo and montane forest until a habituated gorilla family is found, granting an intimate hour in their presence. The afternoon is spent at leisure or exploring cultural initiatives around Kinigi. Overnight at the same lodge.

A light trek in the bamboo zones introduces the playful golden monkeys, known for their energy and expressive behaviour. After the encounter, the journey continues south to Nyungwe Forest National Park through rolling hills and tea plantations. At dawn, the rainforest awakens as travellers embark on a guided chimpanzee trek deep within Nyungwe’s rich biodiversity. The experience is complemented in the afternoon by a canopy walkway experience, offering panoramic views above the treetops. The evening is spent relaxing at the lodge while surrounded by Nyungwe’s serene landscapes.

After a peaceful breakfast overlooking the forest, travellers are driven back to Kigali via scenic, winding routes. Depending on the schedule, optional stops may be made before drop-off at the hotel or airport, marking the end of the forest-inspired escape.
