Detailed Itinerary

Arrival in Kigali and Scenic Drive to Volcanoes National Park

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport or after breakfast at your hotel, meet your professional safari driver-guide for a welcome briefing. Begin your journey with a Kigali city tour, visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local art centers, and bustling markets that reflect Rwanda’s resilience and rebirth. After lunch, depart on a 2.5-hour scenic drive through Rwanda’s rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and small villages toward Volcanoes National Park in Musanze. The towering Virunga volcanoes gradually come into view, cloaked in mist and mystery. Upon arrival, check in at your mountain lodge, enjoy dinner, and rest for the adventure ahead.

First Gorilla Trekking Experience in Volcanoes National Park

Start the day early with breakfast, then transfer to Kinigi Park Headquarters for a detailed briefing from park rangers. You’ll be assigned to a specific gorilla family and set off into the dense rainforest for your first unforgettable gorilla trekking experience. The trek may last between one and four hours, depending on the gorillas’ movements, but the reward is extraordinary — a close, one-hour encounter with a gorilla family, observing their natural behavior and intimate bonds. Watch as the silverback protects his family, mothers nurse their infants, and juveniles tumble playfully through the forest.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the afternoon, visit the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, where you’ll gain insights into ongoing research and conservation efforts. Here, you can engage with scientists, view exhibits on gorilla behavior, and learn how Rwanda has become a global model for sustainable conservation. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Behind the Scenes Conservation and Second Gorilla Encounter

After breakfast, enjoy a second day inside the park — this time with a “Behind the Scenes” gorilla experience that goes deeper than a standard trek. Meet with researchers or park staff to learn about gorilla monitoring, health checks, and tracking methods used to protect these endangered species. You’ll participate in discussions and activities that reveal how data collection and community programs ensure the gorillas’ survival. Later, embark on your second gorilla trek, possibly to visit a different gorilla family, offering new insights into family structure, personality, and daily routines.

After this immersive conservation experience, return to your lodge for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure. You may opt to visit the nearby Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo, explore Musanze town, or simply unwind at your lodge with mountain views and the sounds of nature. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.

Dian Fossey Tomb Hike and Return to Kigali

After breakfast, set out for a guided Dian Fossey Tomb Hike, a journey through bamboo and hagenia forests to the historic Karisoke Research Center site. Along the way, your guide will share the story of Dian Fossey’s life, her groundbreaking gorilla research, and her enduring impact on global conservation. The hike, lasting about two to three hours, ends at her grave beside her beloved gorilla Digit — a moving tribute to her dedication.

Descend to the base, enjoy lunch at your lodge, and begin your drive back to Kigali, passing scenic landscapes and local villages along the way. Upon arrival, you’ll be dropped off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport, marking the end of a profound four-day journey — one that brings you closer to both Rwanda’s wildlife and the heroes who protect it.
