Detailed Itinerary
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park
Following a refreshing cup of African tea or coffee, you will set out on a two-hour Kigali city tour, featuring stops at local craft markets and the Kigali Genocide Memorial. The journey then continues with a six-hour drive to Nyungwe National Park, including an en-route visit to the King’s Palace and a lunch break in Butare.
Nyungwe Chimp Trek, and Canopy Walk
After a hearty breakfast, you will attend a briefing on the regulations for chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe, beginning at 7:00 am. From either the Uwinka or Cyamudongo trailheads, you will embark on a trek lasting two to four hours, followed by a full hour of observing these fascinating primates in close proximity.
Nyungwe National Park, an expansive rainforest, shelters more than 500 chimpanzees along with numerous other primates, birds, and mammals that you are likely to encounter along the way.
After returning, you will enjoy a leisurely lunch before setting out at 2:00 pm for the famous Nyungwe canopy walk, a two-hour adventure offering breathtaking views of the forest canopy, vibrant birdlife, and playful primates from a suspended walkway.
Nyungwe-Volcanoes National Park
You will then continue your journey to Volcanoes National Park, pausing to savor a refreshing cup of African tea or coffee along the way. The drive offers stunning vistas of Lake Kivu, lush plantations, and Rwanda’s rolling hills. Upon arrival, you will enjoy lunch before visiting the picturesque Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Begin your day with a refreshing cup of Rwanda’s finest tea or coffee before departing your lodge for a briefing on gorilla trekking guidelines. Equipped with a packed lunch and drinking water, you will be assigned a gorilla family and set out from Kinigi for the trek, which may take between 2 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ movements.
Once in their presence, you will spend a magical hour observing their behavior, capturing photographs, and experiencing their world before returning for some relaxation. Later in the afternoon or evening, you will head out again for a cultural visit to the Gorilla Guardians Village near Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park to Kigali City Tour
After breakfast, you will proceed to Kinigi for a briefing on the guidelines for golden monkey tracking. At 8:00 am, the trek begins, lasting between two to four hours and culminating in a captivating one-hour encounter with these lively primates. Once the experience is complete, you will return from the forest, check out of your lodge, and drive back to Kigali.
